Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is integrally involved with the society it serves through various engagement initiatives.

From teaching and learning support at schools through to research and development initiatives with industry, the University’s 10-year celebration is also a celebration for the wider NMMU community.

As such, various events have been especially planned to celebrate the University’s first decade in conjunction with many different community stakeholders. Other annual events will incorporate the ten-year theme as a means of recognising the significant role played by those who live and work beyond the university’s six campuses.

The community events include:

  • 10 000 hands clean-up in 10 areas within and beyond NMMU on 10 June
  • An exhibition, “Mandela, man of the people” exhibition by photographer Peter Magubane
  • A 10km Human Race Day organised by Madibaz Sport and the Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism and Democracy on NMMU’s campuses on 25 September

These established events include:

  • The Chancellor’s Dinner on 15 April
  • Isisusa 2015 Jazz Concert at the Opera House on 22 September
  • The Alumni Awards in October
  • Vice-Chancellor’s Cultural Evening in November

Various schools, departments, units and other divisions will also be celebrating with their own partners as a means of both reflecting on their joint successes and consolidating the relationship as the University moves into its second decade.
