The Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism & Democracy (CANRAD) and Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) is collaborating with NEA and the NMMU School of Clinical Care Sciences (SoCCS) to both celebrate the university’s milestone each and assist the needy.
“We envisage 3000 participants at this event so we’re branding it ‘The Human Race’, rather than the nurses’ race,” says chairperson of the PE Chapter of NEA, Prof Dalena van Rooyen.
Last year, the first NEA Nurses’ Fun Run/Walk on 17 May attracted more than 100 participants, and gave nurses opportunity to relax, have some fun, exercise and network with other nurses in the healthcare profession.
“We’re very excited about this growing initiative. Proceeds of the event will be allocated to the Nursing Education Association’s community outreach programmes, namely Project Sparkle and the NEA Mandela Day Community Outreach,” says Prof van Rooyen.
The wheelchair friendly race starting at 10:00 will also take participants through NMMU’s South and North campuses which is within a nature reserve.
The entry fee for adults is R30 and R10 for students and learners. Participants older than 60 years get free entry. There will be medals for 3 000 runners and lots of lucky draw prizes.
“The school or church or sports club or any individual who recruits the most participants will also win a cash prize,’’ says organiser Derrick Hoshe of Madibaz Sport.
Entry forms will be available from all sports shops in the Metro, the Fitness Centre, the Campus Sports shop and at the EP Athletics offices at the Westbourne Oval.
